Halcyon Nights: Magento to Shopify, artist prints and a Wonder Box

Halcyon Nights is an Australian baby and kids clothing brand known for prints drawn by Australian artists. We moved it from Magento to Shopify, sorting out orders with no customer, customers with several accounts and products made of sub-products, and built a Wonder Box: a mystery box worth more than $300 that the team fills to suit the age, gender and season a shopper picks. The brand reports strong growth since the move.

IN SHORT

  • Halcyon Nights is an Australian baby and kids clothing brand whose prints are drawn by Australian artists, and Lucent Commerce moved it from Magento to Shopify.
  • The migration had to resolve orders with no customer attached, customers with several accounts, and products made of sub-products.
  • Shoppers filter by fabric, style, size and collection, and browse ranges built from each artist's designs.
  • We built the Wonder Box, a mystery box worth more than A$300 for A$149, chosen by age, gender and season.
  • The brand reports strong growth since the move.

The challenge

Halcyon Nights sells baby and kids clothes and bedding: bodysuits, rompers, leggings, knitwear, swimwear, sleepwear, hats, blankets and matching sets. Much of it is seasonal, and much of it carries a print drawn by an Australian artist, so each range has a story behind it. A store like that cannot be a plain grid of products.

Moving it off Magento was harder than moving the products. Some orders had no customer connected to them, some customers had several accounts, and some products were made of other products, which Magento handles in its own way and Shopify does not. Each had to be understood before anything moved, or order history and customer records would arrive wrong.

How we approached it

  1. 01

    Understand what Magento held

We worked through how the Magento store was structured: how its products were composed of sub-products, how customers and orders were linked, and where the links were missing.

  2. 02

    Connect orphan orders to customers

A number of orders had no customer attached. We worked out how to match each of them to a customer so the history was not lost on Shopify.

  3. 03

    Merge duplicate accounts

Many customers had more than one account in Magento. We merged them so each customer arrived as one person with their whole order history.

  4. 04

    Rebuild products and filters

We migrated the products, resolving sub-products into a form Shopify can sell, and rebuilt the filters shoppers use: fabric, style, size and collection, across tops, bodysuits, rompers, bottoms, outerwear, swim, hats, dresses and matching sets.

  5. 05

Give each artist's print a range

Each range starts from an Australian artist's design. The design goes through an approval step before it goes live, and is then carried across items such as a baby wrap, a long-sleeve romper or bodysuit, a hat, socks, booties, leggings, a knit blanket and a cardigan. The Prints and Artists section tells the artist's story.

  6. 06

    Build the Wonder Box

We built the Wonder Box. The shopper picks an age, a gender and a season, and the merchant team fills the box to suit them. It is priced at A$149 for at least A$300 of product, with gift wrap and shipping included.

The Wonder Box: a mystery box that still fits the child

A mystery box is easy to sell and easy to get wrong. If the contents do not suit the child, the surprise is a return. The Wonder Box asks three questions first: how old is the child (newborn, 0 to 3 months, 3 to 6, 6 to 12 months or one year), is it a boy, a girl or gender neutral, and is it summer or winter.

Those choices go to the merchant team, who decide what goes in the box. The page promises at least $300 of Halcyon Nights product for the price, one full-priced piece from the newest collection, and that lucky boxes may hide a surprise quilt or blanket. Gift wrap and shipping are included, so a box can go straight to a new baby.

The same idea carries through the brand: a shopper can browse an artist's print across a blanket, a wrap, a cardigan and a hat, and the Wonder Box is the way to let the team choose for them.

The result

Halcyon Nights now runs on Shopify with its customers merged and its order history connected, with filters that match how people shop and the Wonder Box as a gift product. Growth has run at about 20% a month since the move, on Lucent's account.

Because the artist ranges, the filters and the Wonder Box are built into the store, the brand can add a new artist or a new season without rebuilding anything.

Questions about the Halcyon Nights migration

What did Lucent Commerce do for Halcyon Nights?

We moved the store from Magento to Shopify, merged customer data, built filters for fabric, style, size and collection, and built the Wonder Box mystery box.

What was hard about the Magento migration?

Orders with no customer attached, customers with several accounts, and products made of sub-products, each of which had to be resolved before migrating.

How did you handle customers with more than one account?

We merged the accounts so each customer arrived as one record with their full order history.

What is the Wonder Box?

A mystery box worth at least A$300 for A$149. The shopper picks an age, a gender and a season, and the merchant team fills the box to suit.

How does the store show the artists' prints?

Each Australian artist's design goes through an approval step, then becomes a range across items such as wraps, rompers, bodysuits, hats, blankets and knitwear, and a Prints and Artists section tells the story.

What results did Halcyon Nights see?

Growth has run at about 20% a month since the move. Customers are merged into one record each, order history is connected, filters match how people shop, and the Wonder Box gift product is live, so a new artist or season can be added without rebuilding anything.
