Trunki: Magento → Shopify Plus
Trunki, the UK kids' ride-on suitcase brand, moved from Magento to Shopify Plus with its design intact and a custom builder for personalized Trunkis. We also built a warranty system, connected their back-office systems and launched their US and German stores. UK revenue is up about 50%.
IN SHORT
- Trunki, a UK maker of ride-on kids' suitcases, moved from Magento to Shopify Plus with Lucent Commerce.
- The brand kept its existing theme and design, and we built a custom app so shoppers can personalize a Trunki part by part, with a price for each part.
- We added a warranty system, connected Trunki's CRM, order management and ERP systems, and integrated their review and search apps.
- UK revenue grew about 50% after the move, the client has had no downtime on Shopify Plus, and we launched the US and German stores.
The challenge
Trunki sells ride-on suitcases for children from the UK and runs stores for several markets. On Magento, the store went down often enough that the business needed a DevOps team available around the clock to keep it running, which is a heavy load for a brand that wants to spend its time on product and marketing.
Moving to Shopify Plus meant two things could not go wrong. The first was the look of the store: Trunki wanted to keep its design and theme, so the new store had to follow what shoppers already knew. The second was the feature the brand is known for, personalizing a Trunki. A shopper picks the colors of the body and box, the wheels, the interior and details such as the nose and eyes, around ten choices in all. Each choice can change the price, and a plain Trunki and a customizable one are priced differently from the start. Shopify has no built-in way to do that, so it could not be left out.

How we approached it
- 01
Keep the design
We began from the theme and design Trunki already had and rebuilt it on Shopify Plus, so the move changed the platform and not the brand.
- 02
Map the customization journey
We walked through the whole path a shopper takes to build a Trunki, starting with the color, the thing people choose first, and then each of the other parts, to see how it should feel on the new store.
- 03
Build the custom app
We built a custom app behind the store that prices every part of a customized Trunki and the base product too, including the difference between the plain Trunki and the customizable one.
- 04
Build a warranty system
We built a warranty system that anyone can use, so a customer who bought a Trunki in a shop can still register their warranty online.
- 05
Connect the systems and apps
We connected the store to Trunki's existing CRM, order management and ERP systems, and integrated the review app and search app they already used.
- 06
Launch more stores and keep improving
After the UK store was live, we launched the German and US stores, and we now work with their marketing team to keep the stores and campaigns aligned.
A Trunki built part by part, with a price for every part
Trunki is known for a kids' suitcase a child can ride, and for letting families personalize it. Any version of the new store had to carry that over, so we built a complete journey around it. The shopper starts with color, then moves through the other parts one at a time until the Trunki is theirs.
The custom app behind the store holds the price of each part and of the base product, so the total updates as choices are made. A plain Trunki and a customizable Trunki are priced separately, and the app handles the difference rather than leaving it to manual setup.
The result
UK revenue grew by about 50% after the move. The biggest change for Trunki was stability: Magento kept going down and tied the business to a DevOps team on call at all hours, and on Shopify Plus there has been no downtime.
With the platform steady, Trunki also grew into more markets: we launched the German and US stores after the UK, and we work with their marketing team to keep campaigns and stores aligned.
