Lovimals: Print on demand with photo upload

Lovimals turned a customer's pet photo into prints, plush Pet Mini Mes, pillows, blankets, socks, drinkware and more. We built a Shopify store where the shopper uploads a photo and picks size, text colour, frame and the pet's name, and a back office that takes each order from artwork to print, proof and shipping. Revenue grew about 10% a month after launch. The store is not trading today.

IN SHORT

  • Lovimals made personalized pet products from a customer's own photo, and Lucent Commerce built its Shopify store and print-on-demand back office.
  • On a product page the shopper uploads a photo and chooses options such as size, text colour, frame and the pet's name, and those choices travel with the order.
  • A back office takes each order, passes the artwork to print, lets the customer approve a proof, and then ships it.
  • Revenue grew about 10% every month after launch. The store is not trading today, and this describes the work while it was.

The challenge

Lovimals was built by a pet lover for pet lovers. A customer sends a photo of their dog, cat or other pet, and the brand turns it into something to keep: a print, a pillow, a blanket, socks, a mug, a puzzle or a Pet Mini Me, a plush shaped like the pet itself. Every item is different, because each one is made from the customer's own photo.

That makes it print on demand, but not the usual kind. A standard store sells a fixed product. Here the product does not exist until the customer has uploaded a photo and chosen the size, the text, the frame and the pet's name. The store had to capture all of that cleanly, the photo had to reach whoever prints it in full quality, and the customer needed a way to confirm it was right before it was made.

How we approached it

  1. 01

Build the personalization on the product page

On a product such as the Customizable Pet Print the shopper chooses a size (A4, A3 or A2), a text colour, a frame and the pet's name, then uploads a photo. The page asks for clear, front-facing photos so the result looks right.

  2. 02

Carry the photo and choices into the order

The uploaded image and every choice are saved with the item, so the order arrives with everything needed to make it.

  3. 03

Receive orders in a back office

A back office takes each order as it is placed. The team can see the artwork and the options, and download the image for printing.

  4. 04

    Pass the artwork to print

From the back office the artwork goes to the printer, so a personalized item moves from order to production without anyone retyping details.

  5. 05

Let the customer approve a proof

The customer reviews what will be made and approves it. Only then is the order sent on, which keeps mistakes from becoming printed products.

  6. 06

    Send it to shipping

Once approved and printed, the order goes to shipping, and the customer can wait for it knowing what they approved.

Upload a photo, make it yours, approve it

The Customizable Pet Print page shows the idea. Size, text colour, frame and the pet's name are all chosen on the page, with a clear Upload your photo button above Add to cart. The price, $19.99 for the A4 print, and the delivery expectations sit on the same page, so the shopper knows what they are getting.

The brand's range follows from the same mechanism. Prints, pillows, blankets, socks, drinkware, hand-drawn pieces and accessories all start from a customer's pet, and the Pet Mini Me plush takes it furthest, with a shape cut around the pet in its own photo.

Behind the page, the order, the photo and the options end up in one place, where the team can print, the customer can approve, and shipping follows. The shopper only sees the simple version: a photo, a few choices and a result they approve.
