Shopify already publishes the budget every app had to pass to get listed. Almost nobody re-runs that test after install, which is why the app that was fast in review is the one slowing you down now.
Most briefs that arrive as “we need an app” are a Flow, a metafield or an extension. If you do need one, four choices made in week one decide what it costs for years.
A bulk mutation is a machine for making ten thousand changes quickly, which is also what it is when the change is wrong. The safety is in the rehearsal, not the API.
Apps do not damage performance in general. Each kind damages a specific metric in a specific way, and knowing which is the difference between fixing it and guessing.
Six to eight numbers, each with its definition written next to it and a decision attached. Most ecommerce board packs are twenty charts and no decisions.
Shopify, the ERP and the warehouse each show a different figure, and every integration project tries to make them agree. The fix is deciding which one is allowed to be right.
Half of a metafield definition can never be changed after you create it. That half is a published interface, and treating it like a settings screen is how catalogs end up with three fields that mean the same thing.
Shopify will let you edit an order and swap an item. What it will not do is tell your fulfillment app, your ERP or your reports that you did.
Nobody owns “products”. Somebody owns price, somebody else owns the SKU, and the argument about who owns the description is the one that breaks your catalog.
Five mechanisms, one job each. Most catalogs are a mess because tags were the easiest thing to reach for at the time.
Shopify integration reliability: make writes idempotent, retry safely, then respect the rate limit, in that order, or retries become duplicate orders.
